"The 1975 US Open is now history. Let history record that 370 players
registered, as against 197 in 1969 when the Open was first in Lincoln.
Let it record that the Lincoln Chess Foundation pledged $5000 as a
donation to the United States Chess Federation to bring the Open here. Let
it record that every cent of that pledge was paid through the generous
participation of businesses and private donors.
Let it record that seventy Nebraskans took part as players, hundreds more
as spectators. Let it record that the Lincoln Hilton was filled to near
capacity every night of the two weeks during which the tournament ran it's
course.
Let it record that players and visitors were nearly unanimous in praise
of the playing rooms, the friendly helpfulness of the hotel staff, and the
smooth efficient work of the directors. Let it record that the city of
Lincoln won a host of friends who will carry praise to every corner of the
country.
Let it be noted that for each of the dozens of tasks to be done, there
were willing hands to do it. Let this be public recognition of some who
have served without fuss or fanfare: Mike Chess and Ted Herman, who
faithfully prepared the daily tournament bulletins; Gary Marks and his
faithful crew who manned the wall boards at the master tables;
Bruce Bergquist and all those who took on the thankless task of collecting
spectator fees at the door; and Terry Cain and Anton Sildmets, who designed
the souvenir program.
Let it be noted that Lincoln's news media were generous with their space
and time, and did all they could to interpret an event that most of their
public knew little about.
Finally let it be said that no record can be made of the countless
hours and energy given by Bart Lewis and Loren Schmidt to making the Open a
success, Bart as general chairman and Loren as treasurer."

"...The Lincoln Chess Club was reorganized in 1950 under the direction of the
late Aleksander Liepnieks and Viktors Pupols (now of Seattle). Through the
interest of the late Bennett Martin, a city father and prominent philantropist,
the club is currently quartered in the Bennett Martin City Library of Lincoln.
In 1964 the Lincoln Chess Foundation came into being throught the efforts of
Frank Watson, a Lincoln attorney, who after several years struggle secured tax
exempt status for the charitable chess organization, an important victory. This
tournament was held in the honor of two of these men, Alexsander Liepnieks and
Bennett Martin, whose widows were on hand for the opening ceremony.
The ceremony was presided over by Lincoln's first woman mayor, the charming
Helen Boosalis, who 'threw out the first pawn' against top-rated Bill Lombardy.
Before making the move she welcomed the players and addressed herself to the
occasion. 'While I understand that pawn to King four is the most common
opening', she said, 'in light of these modern times I choose to play pawn to
Queen four.' (It is appropriate to mention that Ruth Cardoso won the women's
trophy, despite strong competition from the current US Women's Champion,
Diane Savereide) After about ten minutes, when things had settled down, we
noticed that Lombardy's opponent had not yet appeared. We found him in the hall
outside the tournament room, nervously pacing back and forth. 'Aren't you going
to play your game?' he was asked. 'But I've never played 1 P-Q4 in my life; I
don't know what to do.' he replied, We assured him that the mayor's move was
only ceremonial and that he could play whatever he liked. Relieved, he
hastened to his redezvous with Grandmaster Lombardy." ...
