"This was the most ambitious undertaking to date of the Lincoln Chess
Foundation, and under the leadership of Hess Baluch, Foundation president,
and of Aleks Liepnieks, chairman of the oraganizing committee, it was a great
success. Here is a report by Aleks:
'The 70th US Open Chess Championship in Lincoln, Nebraska, was one of the
strongest (probably the strongest) US Open in history. Among the 197
participants were 3 grandmasters, 20 masters, and 40 experts. Players
came from 32 states, Canada, and England. There were 34 from Nebraska --
15 from Omaha, 11 from Lincoln and 8 from the rest of the state. ...
The tournament was directed by International master George Koltanowski,
assisted by Col. Paul Webb.
The chess banquet, held in the Lincoln Hotel, which was also the
tournament site, drew 110 persons. Col. Ed Edmondson, Executive Director
of the US Chess Federation, spoke.
Next year's US Open will be in Boston.'"

"THE THREE-WAY TIE for first place, and of course, second and third,
involved former open champions, Pal Benko of Jersey City, New Jersey, and
Arthur Bisguier of Hartsdale, New York, and also Milan Vukcevic of
Cleveland Heights, Ohio who scored 9.5 - 2.5 . Benko was the first of
equals as he had defeated two of his chief rivals. Vukcevic and Robert Byrne,
in "must" games; and he was awarded the first place trophy. The three winners
evenly divided $2800 of the three first prizes ($1500, 800 and 500).
Benko displayed his usual brand of quality chess combining positional play
of a high order with a fighting spirit which subjects all his opponents to
very great pressure. Only once did he falter, against Viktor Pupols of Holly,
Washington." ...
"Viktor Pupols scored the upset of the tournament when he beat Benko in
round 7, and he actually led the tournament with an impressive 6.5 points.
Subsequent losses to Byrne, Poschel and Pruner dimmed the luster of his
early showing.
Of the players with 8 points, veteran chessmaster Denker played in his
first Open of more than 25 years and made his presence felt by drawing with
Benko and losing hard games to Byrne, Vukcevic and Poschel. He also played
some of the longest games in the tournament; his draw with Martinowsky and
his loss to Poschel must have averaged 100 moves apiece. Certainly, such
enthusiasm and zest for chess is commendable particularly in view of the
tendency of more and more players to settle for fast draws."...
"The Women's Championship was also extremely close and hard-fought. It
resulted in a victory for affable Eva Aronson of St Petersburg, FL, who
scored six points. Adele Goddard of Miami, FL finishing with two wins in her
last two games, scored 5.5 to take over second place. Mrs Mary Bain of
New York and Greta Olsson of Los Angeles each scored 5 points."...
"The U.S. Speed Championship was won handily by Robert Byrne, and the
newly elected president of the United States Chess Federation, Leroy Dubeck,
took second place."
