One of the best tournaments I have ever attended was held this
past fall in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I played in the highly
rated Open section, which had 48 players (I was the 4th lowest
player with my 1736 rating). I played the State champions of
Missouri and South Dakota, an Expert from Maryland, an Expert from
Minnesota, and an Expert from Nebraska. I drew 2 experts and beat
the South Dakota Champion to wind up 2 pts out of 5. The games
were all well fought, and had the occasional oversights; but two
unusual openings (Alekhine Defense - Krejik Var; Kings Gambit - Cunningham)
brought me my two draws.
The playing site was excellent, with a seperate table for each game
played; and the new auditorium complex in Sioux Falls couldn't have
been situated better for accomodations and parking.
There were at least 6 Grand masters present, several IMs, and a
whole host of masters from Manitoba, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri.
Nebraska was represented by Justin Ballard (3.5), Joe Kruml (2),
Bob Hollings (2.5), Tom O'Connor (1.5), Roger Simond (1.5),
John Linscott (1.5), and this was just in the Open section.
In the Premier Section won by Edwin Schreiber from Colorado tied with
Dmitry Khots each with 4 pts (Mr Schrieber didn't even have to play
the first round, he got [bought] one of those 'business man's' points.
In the Premier Section was Bruce Draney (3.5), Wayne Presnall (3.5),
Ben Fabrikant (2.5), Jordan Otte (2).
The tournament was a special treat for me in being able to meet a
lot of the players I use to play with in my college days in Minnesota.
Carol and I also took in the actual "Sioux Falls", the Zoo, and the
Empire Shopping Mall.
I was told to mark my calendar for September 11-13, 1998; this has
to be one of the finest, strongest, best organized, most economical,
and most enjoyable tournament you could attend.
